Visa Application Process for India

The Embassy of Sweden is pleased to announce the opening of their Visa Application Centre operated by VFS Global Services Private Limited in New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Ahmedabad This site provides information on procedures applicable to all country nationals who wish to apply for a Visa to travel to Sweden.

The visa applications are to be submitted at the Swedish Visa Application Centre at New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Bangalore, Kolkata and Ahmedabad in accordance with the Jurisdiction specified. All applications will be assessed by The Embassy of Sweden, located in New Delhi.

The VAC shall receive visa applications from residents of the Indian Union and any other country nationals.

Visa Application Process for Nepal

From the 1 August 2017 the Embassy of Sweden will receive and decide Schengen visa applications from Nepal, if the main destinations are Sweden, Denmark or Estonia.

Applicants can submit their visa application at the visa application center between 08:00 – 12:00. No prior appointment is required for the submission of the documents.

How to Apply (For India and Nepal)

Submission of visa application can be done only by the following:

  • Applicant
  • Representative

All applicants wishing to submit the application directly to the Embassy will still be required to apply in person.

Collection of passport (For India only)

The Embassy of Sweden has implemented a change in arrangement for the collection of passport(s) from VFS Visa Application Centre. With effect from 02 November 2015, third party collection of the documents or passports will not be permitted, except in the following cases:

  • Immediate Family Member (i.e. Parents, Children, Siblings)
  • One member of a group collecting for the entire group
  • A person collecting on behalf of Govt. officials if authorized on the Govt. letter head or department
  • Representative of a company - Authorization letter on the letter head of the company and the official ID card
  • If any of the above comes for passport collection they need to carry the following documents
    • Photocopy of Govt. ID card
    • Original ICR
    • Authorization Letter from applicant

Applicants who do not wish to collect their documents in person and whose documents cannot be collected by one of the above should pay a compulsory courier charge (INR 300/-) at the time of submission.

Applicants also have a possibility to apply for short stay Schengen visa directly at the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi on Monday and Friday between 09.00 -11.00 .

Courier Form

The applicants are requested to mention the complete delivery address on the covering letter. In case no specific address is mentioned on the covering letter, the passport will be sent to the address mentioned on the Visa Application Form.

This procedural change is to ensure the safe and secure return of documents to applicants.

Collection of passport (For Nepal)

Processed passports can be collected from the visa application center by the following:

  • Applicant
  • Representative with authority letter along with photo id proof.

Validity of passports

(For India)

The applicant shall present a valid travel document (passport) the validity of which extends at least three months beyond the intended date of departure from the territory of the Member States (or, in the case of several visits, after the last intended date of departure from the territory of the Member States). It shall contain at least two blank pages and shall have been issued within the previous 10 years.

Please note that as per information received from the Indian Authorities, handwritten and not machine readable passports are no longer issued and manual changes in Indian passports are no longer permitted since 1 April 2010. The Embassy of Sweden thus does not accept:

  1. Handwritten or not machine readable Indian passports issued after 01 April 2010;
  2. Indian passports that contain a manual entry (observation) made after 01 April 2010 where the biographical data (including name place and date of birth and sex) of the passport holder were changed.

(For Nepal)

The applicant shall present a valid travel document (passport) the validity of which extends at least three months beyond the intended date of departure from the territory of the Member States (or, in the case of several visits, after the last intended date of departure from the territory of the Member States). It shall contain at least two blank pages and shall have been issued within the previous 10 years.

Processing Time

(For India)

Processing time is usually 10 to 12 calendar days from the day the application was submitted to VFS Global in New Delhi. Please note that applications submitted to other VFS Global-offices than New Delhi will take another two days due to postal delivery.

Applicants can instantly track the status of their application by clicking on Track your Application or by sending a SMS to VISA SE passport number to 57333. There will be no need to follow up with the Embassy or the Call Centre to ascertain when the passport will be returned.

(For Nepal)

Processing time is usually 10 to 12 calendar days from the day the application was submitted to VFS Global, Kathmandu. Please note that applications submitted in Kathmandu Visa Application Centre will take another four days due to postal delivery.

VFS Charges

  • For India

Please note the visa fee for Swedish visa is payable in cash or by debit or credit card.

There will be a service charge of Rs 935/- by VFS Global (inclusive of Service tax) levied per application over and above the visa fees. In case you would like your passport couriered to your specified address, you can request of this facility at the time of submitting your application. This optional service is available for an additional fee of Rs.300/- (inclusive of Service tax). The service charge and the courier fee is payable in cash or by Debit/Credit Card at the time of submitting your application.

  • For Nepal
    • The only acceptable method of payment for Visa Fees is by single Demand Draft in Indian Rupees (INR). Demand Draft should be drawn in favor of Embassy of Sweden (visa) payable at New Delhi, India. Please note that demand draft should only be issued by Nationalize or any international bank.
    • Applicants applying at the Swedish Visa Application Centre shall be levied a service charge of NPR. 3312/-
    • In addition to the Visa Fees, applicant requires to pay the VFS Global Service Charge (inclusive of all taxes), by Cash or by demand draft.

Medical Insurance

(For India only)

All applicants while applying for a visa will be required to have overseas travel medical insurance valid for all Schengen countries. The insurance has to cover the applicant at least for 30,000 Euros or equivalent for all risks, e.g. accident, illness, medical emergency evacuation, repatriation, etc. The policy has to clearly specify the period of validity and has to cover the entire duration of the trip including the date of arrival and departure.

Other information

  • Children under 18 traveling without one or both parents or without a legal guardian must provide an affidavit for travel signed by both parents or by the parent or legal guardian not traveling and also a copy of passport's 1st and last page of parent.
